Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How does the Air Brush Sunless Tanning System 'tan' the skin without the sun?
A: The active ingredient in the Air Brush Sunless Tanning System causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids in the top layer of the skin to produce a nice tan, like the sun does, but without the damage to the skin.

Q: Is the process safe?
A: The active ingredient in our Air Brush Sunless Tanning System (DHA) has been in use for over 30 years without any harmful effects reported.

Q: How long should my tan last?
A: With absolutely no sun exposure at all, the tan will last anywhere from 3-7 days.

Q: How long does it take to apply the Air Brush Sunless Tanning System?
A: About 15 minutes or less.

Q: Will chlorine in a pool affect my tan?
A: It is not only the chlorine, but just the act of being submerged in water for any length of time, plus the rubbing of the towel on the skin to dry off that will speed the exfoliation process of the skin (and the tan!)

Q: What is that smell?
A: Sometimes, with some body chemistry, the DHA will react with the amino acids and start to produce a starchy smell. That is the bad news. The good news is that only you can smell it, and it will disappear with your shower on the next day.

A few notes about our Sunless Tanning System:

  1. No sunless tanner currently available contains adequate sunscreen, so you should make sure to plan any time in the sun accordingly. Do not confuse self-tanning with protection from the sun.
  2. If you are using a topical skin treatment, such as Retin-A or Hydrocortisone, check with your doctor before using our Air Brush Sunless Tanning System, or any self-tanner.
  3. Be realistic about choosing the depth of your tan. Your skin color (type) will determine how real your tan looks. Extremely fair skinned clients will react differently to the tanning ingredients than darker-skinned clients, just as tanning in the sun differs.

Before your first Air Brush Sunlees Tanning System appointment:

  1. Wear loose-fitting clothes, such as a sundress to your tanning appointment.
  2. Make sure to allow enough time. It will be about 10 to 12 hours before you can take a shower.
  3. Shortly before your tanning session, you will need to take a shower or bath, using a cotton washcloth to exfoliate your skin. The active ingredient in our Air Brush Sunless Tanning System works on the top layer of the skin, so there is no point in tanning dead skin. Dead skin cuts down on the life of your tan, and makes it look uneven.
  4. Do not shave your legs on the day of the tan, but you must depilate before. Smooth legs, smooth tan!
  5. Dry your skin, and apply moisturizing lotion (not oil,) the night before. Make sure to pay special attention to your legs, knees, ankles, tops of feet, toes, elbows, and knuckles.
  6. Allow for 30 minutes when you come for your tan. The actual tanning takes about fifteen minutes, and it takes another 15 minutes to dry.
  7. Wear cotton clothes preferably. However, if it gets on your clothes, don't worry. It will wash off.

Instructions on maintaining your tan:

  1. SKIN CONDITION: Some people flake a lot and some don't. Oily skin will retain a tan longer than dry skin.
  2. EXFOLIATION: If you did not exfoliate properly, your tan will start to flake off after 24 hours. Your skin must be clean and smooth to get a smooth, clean tan.
  3. TIGHT CLOTHING: Any piece of clothing that generally chafes the skin will cause the skin, and the tan, to rub off.
  4. After obtaining your base tan, you can generally get by with tanning once a week. The less you expose your tan and skin to water, the longer it will last.
  5. Get in the habit of moisturizing your skin day and night.
  6. The time of the year will affect your skin, and therefore your tan. As your skin changes with the seasons, you will need to keep dry skin moisturized.
  7. Long, hot baths or showers are death to tans. They speed up the exfoliation process.
